From the Gin craze of the mid 18th century to our modern day love for a cheeky G&T the British obsession with gin is centuries old.
Gin was Created in Holland and popularised in England under the rule of Dutch William of Orange. It was originally thought to have medicinal properties curing everything from Gout to Kidney disease and favourable taxation policies due to our war with France made gin the drink of choice among the masses. However, by the mid eighteenth century the average Londoner was consuming an average of 14 gallons of gin a year and gin was being blamed for the perceived moral disintegration of society.
Nicknamed mothers ruin excessive gin consumption was thought to cause infertility, prostitution and criminality and was believed to be the main reason why London’s death rate was much greater than its birth rate during this time.
Happily our modern love for gin is a little more wholesome with the emphasis on quirky artisanal producers and experimentation with different tonics and accompaniments.
